2003 Emergency Calls

 

Call #16: 06-20-2003 – A seriously damaged truck sits on the Moose River Bridge in Jackman following an early morning crash.  All of the cab of the truck sustained serious damage except for the driver’s seat area.  The driver was very, very lucky.

33.  12/27/2003 – Smoke in a building – Main Street (U.S. Route 201), Jackman.  Something plastic had been placed on the furnace heat exchanger.  The heat caused the plastic item to melt which filled the house with toxic smoke.

 

32.  12/10/2003 – Truck crash – Main Street (U.S. Route 201), Sandy Bay Township.  A tractor-trailer truck loaded with oak boards went off the road into the ditch.  The truck spun around scattering the load of boards several hundred feet in the road and in the ditch.  The tractor of the tractor-trailer truck was heavily damaged and the driver of the truck was hurt.  From the time of the accident until the heavily damaged truck and boards were finally removed was nearly 10 hours.

 

31.  12/10/2004 – Car off the road into the trees – Long Pond Road (Route 15), Jackman.  For whatever reason the driver of the car went off the road and into the trees.  The driver and her three passengers were not injured.

 

30.  12/04/2003 – Log truck rollover – Spencer Road, Appleton Township.  The truck went off the logging road and rolled over on its side, temporarily trapping the driver in the truck.  He suffered only minor injuries.

 

29.  12/02/2003 – SUV rollover – Pleasant Street, Moose River.  An SUV slid off the snow covered road and rolled over stopping on its roof.  Fortunately, neither the driver nor the passenger was injured.

 

28.  11/30/2003 – SUV off the road and crashed – Main Street (Route 201), Sandy Bay Township.  A vehicle slid off the snow-covered road and crashed into ledge.  Although the vehicle sustained some substantial damage, the driver was not hurt.

 

27.  11/25/2003 – Vehicle off the road – Route 201, Johnson Mountain Township.  A vehicle spun around and slipped off the road backwards into the ditch.  A passerby reported a vehicle accident with no other details, thus generated a full response from the fire department and the local ambulance.  The vehicle was not damaged and there were no injuries.

 

26.  11/13/2003 – Rescue injured hunter – in off the Holeb Road (logging road), Dennistown Plantation.  A hunter climbing into a tree stand fell on to the ground and broke his pelvis.  Firefighters assisted Jackman Area Volunteer Ambulance Corps members in carrying the injured hunter out of the woods.

 

25.  11/11/2003 – Tractor Trailer rollover – Main Street (Route 201), Sandy Bay Township.  Wet snow was falling making the road treacherous. The truck slid off the road and tipped over on its side in the ditch.  The driver received only a couple of cuts on his hand.

 

24.  10/22/2003 – Chimney Fire – Sandy Stream Road, Moose River.

 

23.  09/29/2003 – Fire alarm activation – Main Street, Jackman.  The alarm system was being tested but the testers failed to notify the security agency that monitors the system.  Thus when the fire alarm went off, the security agency notified the fire department’s dispatch center and the fire department was dispatched.

 

22.  09/07/2003 – Vehicle accident – Route 201, Johnson Mountain Township.  Late at night, a moose came out into the road and the driver veered off the road to avoid hitting the moose.  The vehicle went into the ditch along the side of the road, hit a culvert and an embankment, went airborne, came back down in to ditch, and then came out of the ditch and went across the road.  The driver had very minor injuries.  He was lucky that his vehicle was equipped with an air bag, as the air bag saved him from suffering severe injuries.  He was not wearing his seat belt.

 

21.  08/18/2003 – SUV rollover – Holeb Road, Forsyth Township.  A SUV rolled over 11 miles in on the Holeb Road, a major logging road.  The driver of the vehicle could not be found.

 

20.  08/16/2003 – Reported tree on a power line, with the tree being on fire – Route 15, Rockwood Strip Township.  The report came in initially without giving the township.  When the fire chief requested more info from the dispatcher, she stated Rockwood Strip Township.  At that point the fire chief told the dispatcher to notify the Rockwood Volunteer Fire Department to handle the incident.

 

19.  08/13/2003 – Log truck rollover – Route 201, Johnson Mountain Township.  A tractor trailer truck carrying dry cement forced the logging truck off the road.  The logging truck hit the guard rail, then swerved sideways back in to the road, tipped over, and the load of logs spilled out in to the road.  The road was completely blocked for some time.

 

18.  08/10/2003 – Reported tree on a power line – Main Street (Route 201), Sandy Bay Township.  There are no power lines in this area; only phone lines.  And the tree has been laying on the phone line for several months.

 

17.  07/28/2003 – Vehicle rollover – Long Pond Road (Route 15), Jackman.  The car drifted off the right side of the road onto the soft shoulder.  The driver turned the steering wheel back sharply to the left, and the car came sliding across the road sideways into the ditch.  When the car struck the ditch it rolled over at least one time and landed upside down in the ditch.  The driver was injured.

 

16.  06/20/2003 – Truck accident – Moose River Bridge, Main Street (Route 201), Jackman – In what can be described as a repeat performance of a truck accident that occurred August 29, 2002, a truck loaded with 45 rolls of newsprint paper approached the bridge too fast and crashed into the bridge spilling 17 of the rolls of paper into the river.  In all it took over 7 hours to remove the rolls of paper from the river and the truck and debris from the bridge.

 

15.  04/25/2003 – ATV accident – Gander Brook Road, Dennistown Plantation.  A driver of an ATV, who had been drinking, went off the road and into the ditch flipping the ATV over.  The driver sustained serious injuries, and after receiving initial treatment at the Jackman Region Health Center, was flown by LifeFlight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

 

14.  04/21/2003 – Out of control permit burn – Giroux Street, Moose River.  A gentleman with a burning permit to burn grass and brush had two areas burning at the same time.  One of the areas was producing flames that were 25 to 30 feet high, so a neighbor reported that the fire was out of control.

 

13.  04/06/2003 – Cargo truck rollover – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  After hitting a series of bumps in the road, the driver of the truck was unable to regain control of the truck and the truck went off the road, struck a berm in the ditch (which destroyed the tractor portion of the truck), and ended up lying on its side in the ditch.  The driver was very lucky and only had minor injuries.

 

12.  03/21/2003 – Alarm activation – Forest Hills Consolidated School, Jackman.  One of the circulator pumps for the boiler overheated and filled the boiler room with smoke.  The smoke spread into adjacent rooms and activated a smoke detector.

 

11.  03/18/2003 – Chimney fire – Nadeau Street, Jackman.  Firefighters extinguished the fire in the chimney and determined that no fire had spread from the chimney in to the house.

 

10. 03/05/2003 – Logging truck rollover – Route 201, Johnson Mountain Township.  A loaded logging truck, going too fast for the slippery road conditions, went off the right side of the road, rolled over on to the driver’s side of the vehicle, spilling the entire load of logs in the road.  The driver was pinned in the vehicle requiring the use of both JMRFD’s “Jaws of Life” and West Forks Volunteer Fire Department’s “Jaws of Life” to free the driver from the truck.  The driver suffered only minor injuries.

 

9.  02/28/2003 – Snowmobile accident – Johnson Mountain Township.  Two snowmobiles collided, with one snowmobiler sustaining moderate injuries.

 

8.  02/21/2003 – Single vehicle accident – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  A single vehicle spun around in the road and slid off the road backwards striking a utility pole.  The driver suffered minor injuries.

 

7.  02/17/2003 – Report of smoke – across Big Wood Lake, Attean Township.  A lakeside resident called to report smoke on the other side of the lake in the vicinity of some camps, but the smoke was from a campfire on the lake being used by ice fishermen.

 

6.  02/05/2003 – Single vehicle rollover – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  Before JMRFD arrived on scene passers by stopped and rolled the vehicle back over and the owner drove it away.

 

5.  02/04/2003 – Single vehicle rollover – Route 201, Parlin Pond Township.  The road was covered with black ice and an SUV spun around, slid off the road and struck a snow bank, then rolled onto its side.  The driver initially said that she was not hurt.  She then said that she had a bump on her head and she would go to her doctor.  Due to possible medical concerns associated with head injuries, she was transported by the Jackman Area Volunteer Ambulance Corps to the Jackman Region Health Center.  The medical professionals at the Health Center evaluated the driver and called for LifeFlight.  The patient was airlifted to a hospital in Bangor.

 

4.  01/30/2003 – Snowmobile accident – Soldiertown Township.  A snowmobiler following the ITS snowmobile trail went off the trail on a corner and hit some trees.  The snowmobiler suffered serious injuries.  When the emergency call was placed to the Jackman Region Health Center, the staff at the Health Center immediately called for LifeFlight.  Two Plum Creek Timber Company foresters were in the area so they located a landing point for the helicopter and relayed the coordinates.  The helicopter easily came to the location and landed, and once JMRFD firefighters and Jackman Area Volunteer Ambulance Corps personnel brought the patient off the snowmobile trail, he was loaded on the helicopter and flown to a hospital in Bangor.

 

3.  01/24/2003 – Snowmobile Accident – just off Main Street, Jackman. The operator of the snowmobile suffered serious injuries when she hit some small trees.  She was transported by the Jackman Area Volunteer Ambulance Corps to the Jackman Region Health Center for emergency treatment.  She was then airlifted from Jackman by LifeFlight helicopter.

 

2.  01/19/2003 – Structure Fire – Pleasant Street, Moose River – A woodstove pipe that passes through a short section of wall to the chimney got very hot and ignited part of the wall.  Less than 1 gallon of water was used to extinguish the fire.  Damage was kept to a minimum.

 

1.  01/12/2003 – Alarm activation – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman – While the resident of the home was away, her Monitor heater mis-fired and went out.  In mis-firing it produced some smoke that entered the home that set off two smoke detectors.  The neighbors across the street heard the smoke detectors and reported the incident.
