42. 12/22/2005 – Chimney Fire – Heald Stream Road, Jackman.  Creosote that leaked between the metal chimney insert and the original brick chimney ignited and burned.  The fire did not spread in to the home.

41. 12/15/2005 – 2 vehicle accident with two people injured, one seriously – Main Street (Rt. 201), Jackman.  An unlicensed driver was traveling at a very high rate of speed, lost control of his car, and spun sideways in front of another car.  The driver of the second car attempted to avoid the collision, but his car ended up striking the first car in the passenger door.  The driver of the second vehicle sustained very serious injuries and was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Bangor for treatment.

40. 11/15/2005 – Vehicle off road – U.S. Route 201, Johnson Mountain Township.  A motorist drove by a vehicle off the road and placed a 911 cell phone call advising that there was a vehicle off the road in the woods 20 miles south of Jackman.  The Somerset County Communications Center dispatcher initially dispatched JMRFD, but the fire chief advised the dispatcher that 20 miles south of Jackman was in West Forks Fire Department coverage area.  The dispatcher then paged WFFD.  West Forks fire personnel responded and after traveling several miles north towards Jackman, they requested that the dispatcher page JMRFD to start heading south to find the vehicle in question.  Just as the first JMRFD vehicle was leaving the fire station, WFFD personnel found the vehicle - it had been beside the road for 8 hours.  The motorist who made the cell phone call did not stop to see that no one was in the vehicle.  The motorist also should have noticed that based on the snow on the vehicle it had been in that location for quite a while.

39. 10/28/2005 – 2 vehicle accident – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  The driver of a car slowed down because a pickup in front of her was turning off, but the driver of a small pickup behind the car was driving too fast and/or was inattentive and rear-ended the car.  The driver of the car and her two young daughters in the car with her were shaken up, but otherwise were not hurt.

38. 10/28/2005 - Fire Alarm Activation – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman. A popcorn popper in use at the school activated a smoke detector.

37. 10/25/2005 – Low hanging power lines and power lines down in the road – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman and Moose River.  Rain changed over to heavy wet snow that brought down trees and power lines throughout the region.  Power was out in the entire region for 2 days while numerous power company crews made extensive repairs.

36. 10/25/2005 – Tree on a power line on fire – Main Street (Route 201), Dennistown.  Recent heavy rains have made the ground very soft allowing a tree to be brought down by fairly light winds.  The top of the tree completely burned off.  The fire did not spread.

35. 10/17/2005 – Small cargo van struck a moose then caught on fire – Main Street (Route 201) on the Jackman/Parlin Pond town line.  On a dark, rainy, windy night, two moose crossed the road in front of the driver of the van, with the van striking and killing one of them.  After the driver stopped the van, he called his company on a cell phone to advise them of what happened, then sat and waited in the van.  After about 5 minutes he noticed smoke coming from the dash, then he saw flames under the dash.  He quickly left the van as the fire spread.  Another driver called 911 to report the fire.  When the fire department arrived (the fire station is over 8 miles from this location) the vehicle was fully involved.

34. 10/07/2005 – Pickup rollover with one injured – Long Pond Road (Route 15), Jackman.  The driver of the pickup looked away to change the radio station.  While changing the station the pickup drifted off the right side of the road on to the gravel shoulder.  The driver steered the vehicle back to the left too sharply, then steered too sharply to the right.  The back end of the pickup slid around and the pickup slid sideways off the road and rolled over.  While rolling the pickup struck a tree and a utility pole.  The pole broke off and the top part landed on the pickup.  The driver was injured, but his injuries could have easily been much worse.

NOTE:  On September 29th the area received a fairly strong wind storm.  The winds brought down numerous trees, many of which fell across power lines and into the road.  JMRFD responded to four serious incidents involved downed trees and downed lines.

33. 09/29/2005 – Burning tree on a power line – Main Street (Route 201), Moose River.  A tree broke off and fell across the three phase power line.  One of the three lines broke and fell to the ground.  The tree stayed hung up on one of the other two lines and burned until a power company crew shut off the power and came to remove the tree.  Once the power was shut off, firefighters cleared the scene.

32. 09/29/2005 – Burning tree on a power line – Spruce Street, Jackman.  The top of a tree broke off and fell on the three phase power line, breaking one of the three lines off which landed across the driveway of a residence.  The top of the tree remained on the other two lines and partially burned where it was in contact with the lines.  Firefighters moved the downed line from the driveway and stood by until the tree top stopped burning.

31. 09/29/2005 – Trees down on phone & cable wires and trees in the road – intersection of Pleasant Street and Heald Stream Road, Moose River.  The caller believed that the trees were on the power line, but where the trees fell there was no power line.  Firefighters marked the trees in the roadway to make them more visible to drivers until a crew could come and clear the trees out of the road and off the wires.

30. 09/29/2005 – Trees down on a power line and trees in the road – Long Pond Road (Route 15), Jackman.  Due to high, gusty winds, numerous trees fell across the power line and across the road along a Ό mile stretch of road.  Because so many trees fell across the power and phone lines, the power line broke in one place, the neutral line broke in two places, and several utility poles were tipped somewhat.  Firefighters, a power company crew, and a local building contractor crew spent over an hour clearing the trees from the road so that it could be opened to traffic.

29. 09/14/2005 – Structure fire – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  A fire in a local boarding house resulted in heavy fire damage to one room, and smoke damage throughout the building.  Most of the tenants will need only wash their clothes and clean other items and their belongings will be fine.  The cause of the fire appears to be an unattended candle.

28. 09/12/2005 – Stove fire at a local restaurant – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  In what is obviously a poor design, the vent for a large gas stove, the top of which is a large frying surface, opens up along the entire back of the stove top.  Although there is about a 4 inch lip from the back of the stove top to the vent, food gets accidentally knocked into the vent.  Home fries that got knocked in to the vent caught fire.  Without taking the stove apart, it is very difficult to get food out of the vent.

27. 09/10/2005 – Car/moose accident with 2 injured – Main Street (Route 201), Dennistown.  The driver of the car was traveling at a high rate of speed and was unable to avoid striking a moose that ran into the road.  The moose totally destroyed the windshield, bent the steering wheel and bent the roof back nearly two feet.  The driver and front seat passenger sustained numerous cuts and contusions, especially to their faces, and the driver also suffered a broken arm.  They were extremely fortunate – they both could have easily been killed.

26. 08/31/2005 – 2 car accident – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  The driver of one car pulling out of a side street on to Main Street could not see another car on Main Street due to other vehicles parked along the side of Main Street.  The car on Main Street struck the car pulling out of the side street.  The driver of the Main Street car suffered minor injuries.

25. 08/28/2005 – Bark mulch fire – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  A passer by reported a small fire at the Attean Overlook rest area, but gave no further details.  The fire involved bark mulch at the base of information displays at the rest area.  Cause of the fire was attributed to improper disposal of smoking materials – there were numerous cigarette butts in the bark mulch.

24. 08/16/2005 – Fire Alarm Activation – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  For unknown reasons a smoke detector activated.  The exterior door near the detector was open, and a nearby neighbor was working on equipment, so smoke from the equipment might have caused the detector to activate.

23. 08/05/2005 – Structure fire in a sawmill – Talpey Road, Moose River. Sawdust leaked from a blower system and piled up around the blower motor.  The motor got hot enough and the sawdust ignited.  The motor, some heavy duty wiring, and a wall were damaged.

22. 08/01/2005 – Power line down – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  A truck came through and hooked the phone line and the power line feeding the Jackman Public Library.  Both wires were pulled down, and the electrical service was completely pulled off the library.  The truck driver did not stop and witnesses were unsure which company owned the truck.

21. 07/23/2005 – Pickup/woods fire – Attean Ridge, Jackman.  Someone stole a pickup, drove it up a jeep trail to a communications tower, and then drove it off through the brush and over a small, rocky embankment.  The pickup hooked one of the cables of the tower going by and pulled down the tower.  After the pickup finally came to a stop against a tree and on rocks and logs, the ground under it caught fire due to the heat from the exhaust system.  The pickup was totally destroyed by the blaze.

20. 07/16/2005 – Alarm System Activation – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  The alarm was caused by a malfunctioning smoke detector.

19. 07/09/2005 – Reported water rescue – in the Moose River, Attean Township.  What was reported as a possible water rescue of a boater, was actually an unattended death of a man in his boat.

18.  07/04/2005 – Structure Fire – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  A fire started in cardboard outside a restaurant adjacent to a wall.  There was fire damage to the outside wall of the restaurant, and there was some smoke and heat damage inside the restaurant in the kitchen.

17.  06/11/2005 – Fire Alarm Activation - Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  Immediately following the graduation ceremony at the school, the alarm system activated.  The probable cause was several people smoking right outside a door that was open with a smoke detector just inside the door.

16. 05/28/2005 – Structure Fire – Main Street (Route 201), Moose River.  For reasons yet to be determined, a fire started in the laundry room of the home while the owner was not home.  Fire damage was limited to the laundry room with some fire damage in the living room and kitchen.  There was extensive heat and smoke damage throughout the home.

15. 05/11/2005 – Extinguishment system activation – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  For unknown reasons, the fire extinguishment system over gas pumps at a local convenience store activated and completely discharged the dry chemical extinguishment agent.

14. 04/27/2005 – Tree on a power line on fire – Route 201, Parlin Pond Township.  On a rainy, windy night, a tree partially blew over and touched a power line off and on.  When the tree touched the power line, there was a lot of sparking and flames.  The fire did not spread.

13.  04/11/2005 – Chimney fire – Main Street (Route 201), Moose River.  A very hot fire burning a lot of material in a large chimney in an old farmhouse took firefighters nearly two hours to completely extinguish.  Firefighters used a special chimney snuffer nozzle to slowly add water to the chimney so that the bricks would not crack and fall apart.

12.  03/29/2005 – Car rollover – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  Snow started falling and building up as slush in the road.  The driver of the car coming down a hill last control of her car in the slushy snow, the car slid across the two lanes going in the opposite direction, went into the snow bank on the side of the road, and rolled over completely one time coming to rest on its wheels.  The driver sustained only minor injuries.

11. 03/21/2005 – Reported structure fire – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  The homeowner decided to burn an old building, but failed to obtain a burning permit.  At least two passers by made 911 cell phone calls to report a structure fire.  The homeowner was summonsed for burning without a permit and will have to pay response costs for the fire department.

10. 03/19/2005 – Snowmobile accident – Spencer Road, Parlin Pond Township.  A snowmobiler traveling down a plowed logging road went off by a bridge and struck a rock.  The snowmobiler was seriously injured.  LifeFlight helicopter was brought to the location to fly the injured snowmobiler to a hospital in Bangor.

9.  03/11/2005 – Reported tree stump on fire along a snowmobile trail, Jackman.  When firefighters questioned several snowmobilers who had been on the trail, none saw anything, so the call was deemed to be unfounded.  The cell phone caller who placed the original 911 call did not answer his phone when the dispatcher called back for more info.

8.  02/11/2005 – Pickup-Logging Truck Crash – Main Street (Route 201), Sandy Bay.  In near white out conditions a south bound pickup coming down hill and a north bound logging truck going up the hill sideswiped, with the result being extensive damage to the pickup and the logging truck going off the road into the ditch and rolling over on to its side.  Neither the driver of the logging truck nor the driver and passenger of the pickup were hurt.

7.  02/08/2005 – Utility Pole Fire – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  A cracked insulator caused the top of the utility pole to catch on fire and plunge the region into darkness.  Power was out in most of the region for over an hour while power company crews made repairs.

6.  01/31/2005 – Snowmobile accident – ITS 89, Jackman.  A snowmobiler making a sharp turn accidentally squeezed the throttle instead of the brake propelling her snowmobile into small trees.  JMRFD used the fire department’s snowmobile and rescue sled to bring the snowmobiler out one mile to the awaiting ambulance.

5.  01/27/2005 – Snowmobile accident – Big Wood Pond, Attean Township.  A snowmobiler traveling at a high rate of speed hit a berm on the ice, and his snowmobile flipped causing him to fall off and hit his head.  He was fortunate and only suffered minor injuries.  Although firefighters brought the rescue snowmobile and sled, the ambulance could get to within 250 feet of the patient so he was hand carried to the ambulance.

4.  01/19/2005 – Fire Alarm Activation – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  Plumbers doing work at the Jackman Region Health Center accidentally activated the fire alarm system.

3. 01/15/2005 – Snowmobile accident – club trail, Moose River.  A snowmobiler was blinded by the low sun and went off the trail striking a tree.  Initially she was knocked out, but soon recovered.  She injured an arm and a leg, but neither injury was severe.  JMRFD used the fire department’s snowmobile and rescue sled to bring the snowmobiler out one half mile to the awaiting ambulance.

2.  01/15/2005 – Snowmobile accident – ITS 88, Bald Mountain Township.  A snowmobiler approached an intersection too fast and rolled his sled.  He sustained some injuries to his back and neck but fortunately the injuries were not too severe.  JMRFD used the fire department’s snowmobile and rescue sled to bring the snowmobiler out 5 ½ miles to the awaiting ambulance.

1.  01/03/2005 – Chimney Fire – Giroux Street, Moose River – Creosote that had built up in the upper portion of the chimney ignited.  Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire with a chimney fire “snuffer” nozzle.  There was no damage to the house.  (The chimney fire “snuffer” nozzle is a specially designed heavy nozzle that sprays a fine mist of water – just enough to absorb heat and extinguish a fire but not enough to crack the chimney and/or the chimney liner.  The nozzle is heavy so that it can be used to break through plugs of material in the chimney.)
