50. 12/04/2007 – Tractor Trailer Truck/Utility Pole – Long Pond Road (Route 15), Jackman.  A west bound truck loaded with spruce logs drifted off the right side of the road striking several trees, the driver overcorrected back to the left and the truck went off the left side of the road in to the ditch.  The truck sheared off a utility pole knocking out power for a large area for 5 hours.  The tractor portion of the truck sustained heavy damage.  The driver was very lucky – he was not hurt.

49. 11/23/2007 – Overheated Circuit Breaker – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  There was no damage.

48. 11/20/2007 – Tractor Trailer Truck/Utility Pole – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  An empty tractor-trailer truck coming down a hill in a 55mph zone was going too fast for the snow-covered roads, and when the road curved to the left the truck went off the road to the right.  The truck sheared off a pole of the main electrical transmission line for the region knocking out power for several hours until equipment could arrive to remove the truck and then the power company could install a new pole.  The driver of the truck was not hurt.

47. 11/17/2007 – Chimney Fire – Heald Stream Road, Jackman.  The fire was contained to the chimney – there was no damage to the house.

46. 11/16/2007 – Pickup Rollover – Route 201, Parlin Pond Township.  During a snowstorm the driver of the pickup lost control, the pickup swerved to the right and rolled over two times.  Although the pickup sustained heavy damage, fortunately the driver was wearing his seat belt and was not injured.

45. 11/13/2007 – Fire Alarm Activation – Main Street (Route 201), Sandy Bay.  For unknown reasons the alarm system activated.  When the alarm was reset it did not reactivate and seems to be ok.

44. 11/04/2007 – Pickup Rollover – Main Street (Route 201), Moose River.  Local young people out horsing around late at night rolled a pickup over in the road while doing donuts.  One of the four occupants of the vehicle was ejected from the vehicle during the rollover and sustained head injuries.  All were very lucky that they were not killed.

43.  10/31/2007 – Pickup-Pole – Main Street (Route 201), Moose River.  The driver of the pickup swerved to avoid two deer in the road.  The pickup sideswiped a utility pole (the pole is broken and will have to be replaced) went in to the ditch and came up into the access road to the local sawmill where the pickup struck a large log.  The driver was not hurt.

42. 09/27/2007 – Vehicle Rollover – U.S. Route 201, Johnson Mountain Township.  For whatever reason, the driver of the unregistered, uninsured vehicle went off the road and rolled over.  Both the driver and the passenger were injured.

39. 08/15/2007 – Car-Moose Accident – Route 201, Johnson Mountain Township.  A passer by using a cell phone drove by a car badly damaged in a collision with a moose but the passer by did not stop to check out the situation.  The passer by called but had no way of knowing if anyone was hurt or even at the scene.  The fire department was dispatched, and within a couple of minutes the dispatchers found out that the state police had been informed about the accident two hours before and no one was injured.  IF YOU THINK YOU SEE SOMETHING THAT MIGHT REQUIRE YOU TO DIAL 911 ON YOUR CELL PHONE, CHECK OUT THE SITUAION FIRST.  SOME AREAS ARE NOW REPORTING THAT OVER HALF OF ALL CELL PHONE 911 CALLS ARE NOT REAL EMERGENCIES; THE CALLERS ONLY PERCEIVE THAT THERE IS AN EMERGENCY BUT DID NOT STOP TO INVESTIGATE.

38. 08/08/2007 – Tree Down Blocking the Road – Main Street (Route 201), Dennistown.  The caller reported a large tree down blocking the road, with wires possibly taken down by the tree.  When the fire department arrived on scene we found two truck drivers cutting up the tree and removing it from the road.  There were no wires involved.

NOTE:  Just after 10am on August 3rd, a severe thunderstorm hit the region with very high winds, heavy rain, and lots of lightning.  Water spouts were spotted on the lake and funnel clouds were reported near the airport.  Numerous trees and wires came down throughout the region.  Calls #34 through #37 all came in within about a half hour.

37. 08/03/2007 – Reported Forest Fire – Somewhere in the Moose River Valley.  Someone fairly high up on the southern end of the valley could see smoke in the northern portion of the valley.  Firefighters looked but could not find anything.  A severe thunderstorm had just come through the area and there were numerous lightning strikes.  Fortunately, there was also heavy rain so any fire started by a lightning strike was probably extinguished.

36. 08/03/2007 – Tree & Power Line Down – Henderson Road, Jackman.  The fire department was just arriving on scene of #35 when this call came in 5 miles away.  A tree fell down in high winds and knocked down the power line.  The breaker on the pole did not trip, so the wire on the ground was energized.  Firefighters blocked off the road until the power company arrived to disconnect the breaker and remove the power line from the road.

35. 08/03/2007 – Lightning Struck Tree on Fire – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  The fire department was on scene of #34 when this call came in 7 miles away.  Heavy rain put out the fire prior to the fire department’s arrival on scene.

34. 08/03/2007 – Trees down in the Road – Main Street (Route 201), Moose River.  High winds with a thunderstorm blew two large trees down in the road, one of which completely blocked the road.  The trees were pulled out of the road and traffic flow resumed.

29. 07/01/2007 – Vehicle Rollover – Long Pond Road (Route 15), Jackman.  The driver of the vehicle fell asleep at the wheel.  The vehicle went off the road, rolled over one and a half times and came to rest on its roof.  The driver managed to get out of the vehicle and walk over a mile to a set of sporting camps to get help.  The driver was injured.  There were no passengers.

26. 06/07/2007 – Fire Alarm Activation – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  For no apparent reason a smoke detector activated and set off the alarm system.

25. 05/11/2007 – Wildland Fire – Giroux Street, Moose River.  The homeowners put cardboard in their burn barrel, believing that the burn barrel no longer had any embers in it from trash that they had burned the day before.  The cardboard ignited and the fire spread to grass, brush, some firewood, etc.  NOTE: BURNING TRASH IS NOT LEGAL IN MAINE.  BURN BARRELS ARE NOT LEGAL.  YOU CAN ONLY LEGALLY BURN BRUSH AND CLEAN LUMBER AND YOU MUST HAVE A BURNING PERMIT TO BURN THESE ITEMS.

24. 05/10/2007 – Wildland Fire – U.S. Route 201, Sandy Bay Township.  The fire, confined to a relatively small area, was caused by the illegal use of fireworks.

23. 05/09/2007 – Wildland Fire – Talpey Road, Moose River.  Due to a cause yet to be determined, a wildfire broke out and burned an acre.  Three homes were threatened by the fire.  One camper trailer that a man was living in was destroyed in the fire.  Also destroyed was an old mobile home that no one was living in, a shed with tools, and other items scattered throughout the property.

22. 04/24/2007 – Non-permitted burn – Talpey Road, Moose River.  Neighbors could see high flames so they called 911 to report a fire.  Four men were burning old lumber that was torn off a trailer.  They did not obtain a permit for the fire.

OUTDOOR BURNING REQUIRES A PERMIT.  AND ONLY BRUSH AND CLEAN LUMBER CAN BE BURNED.

21. 04/06/2007 – Fire in Oven – Long Pond Road (Route 15), Jackman.  The homeowner preheated the oven to bake something, and when she opened the oven door grease inside the oven caught on fire.  She quickly closed the oven door and called 911.  The fire was out before the fire department arrived on scene a few minutes later.

20. 04/05/2007 – Chemical Tank Truck blocking the road – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  During a snowstorm when the roads were very slippery, a tank truck hauling caustic soda slid back on a hill, partially jackknifed, and got stuck in the snowbank.  The trailer was completely blocking 2 of the 3 lanes, and partially blocking the third lane at the bottom of a very dangerous hill.  Firefighters had to stop the traffic, and firefighters recruited a fully loaded pulp truck to pull the tank truck back on to the road.

19. 04/04/2007 – Pickup-Pole – Main Street (Route 201), Moose River.  During a snow storm with very poor road conditions, a pickup went off the road and struck a utility pole.  The pickup sustained substantial damage, and the pole was broken and will need to be replaced.  Before the arrival of the fire department on scene, the driver got out of the vehicle, locked it up, and left.  A while later the owner called from a local bar to report the vehicle as being stolen.

18. 03/31/2007 – Snowmobile Fire – Old Canada Road, Sandy Bay Township.  Two snowmobilers parked to off-load their sleds from their snowmobile trailer, and when the first sled was started it caught fire.  Both snowmobiles were destroyed and the trailer was extensively damaged.

17. 03/28/2007 – Rescue Assist with Rescue Sled – On the shore of Big Wood Pond, Jackman.  A man clearing trees by a camp suffered an apparent stroke.  JMRFD firefighters used our snowmobile and rescue sled to transport the man over the ice to the ambulance waiting at the Jackman town boat landing.

16. 03/18/2007 – Structure Fire rekindle – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  There had been a little bit of smoldering in the remnants of the basement, and at about 5:30pm some firewood and other material ignited.  Firefighters easily extinguished what is hoped to be the last hot spot of this fire.

15. 03/18/2007 – Structure Fire rekindle – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  At 3am a passing Border Patrol agent noticed that one of the piles of debris was burning – the pile closest to an adjacent home.  Although all of the material pulled out by the crane and piled up had been thoroughly wet down, apparently some burning material in the pile never got wet down and after smoldering for many hours finally ignited.

14. 03/17/2007 – Structure Fire – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.   None of the family of 5 that lived in the home was at home when other people in the area noticed fire in the house.  Within a couple of minutes fire was rolling out of several windows and was spreading rapidly throughout the large home.  Firefighters had no chance to save the home – it was quite a battle for firefighters to get the upper hand on the fire to keep if from spreading to adjacent structures.  Many hours after the fire began a crane had to be brought in to rip the heavily damaged structure apart so that firefighters could extinguish the blaze.  The home and contents were a total loss.  No one was injured.

13. 03/16/2007 - Fire Alarm Activation – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  A popcorn maker started smoking and activated the fire alarm system.

10. 02/28/2007 – Fire Alarm Activation – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  A floor buffer in use apparently set off a smoke detector which activated the fire alarm system.

9. 02/20/2007 – Cargo Van off the road – Route 201, Johnson Mountain Township.  The driver of the southbound van drifted off the right side of the road, hit the snowbank, and the van spun around facing back to the north.  There was a fair amount of damage to the front of the van.  The driver was not hurt.

8. 02/19/2007 – Chimney Fire – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  A build up of creosote near the top of the chimney ignited.  There was no damage to the house.  Weather in the first part of the winter was prime for building creosote – warm wet weather spells mixed in with some cool weather.  If you burn wood for heat, HAVE YOU CHECKED YOUR CHIMNEY RECENTLY?

7. 02/18/2007 – SUV off the road – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  The SUV pulling a snowmobile trailer coming down a big hill lost traction and spun around in the road and slammed in to the snow bank on the opposite side of the road.  The top of the snowmobile trailer broke off and the snowmobile came off the trailer.  There was also some damage to the SUV.  The driver was not hurt.

6. 02/16/2007 – SUV Rollover – US Route 201, Parlin Pond Township.  The roads were snow covered from a recent snow storm.  The vehicle slid off the road and rolled over.  The driver was not hurt.

5. 01/29/2006 – Chimney Fire – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  Although the homeowner had cleaned the chimney prior to the winter heating season, a fair amount of creosote had built up and ignited.  The neighbor who reported the fire stated that flames at least a foot high were coming out of the chimney.

4. 01/25/2006 – Single Vehicle Accident – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  The vehicle drifted off the right edge of the road and then veered back to the left too quickly.  The vehicle skidded around and slid sideways across the road and in to the woods.  The driver was injured.  The passenger was ejected from the vehicle and died a short time later.

3. 01/16/2007 – Plugged chimney – Giroux Street, Moose River.  Smoke started backing up in to the house, so the owner called 911 to report a chimney fire.  In actuality, there was no fire.  Creosote inside the chimney fell off the inside walls of the chimney and partially blocked the chimney causing the smoke to back up.

2.  01/09/2007 – Pickup-Tractor trailer truck collision – Main Street (Route 201), Dennistown.  Snow early yesterday morning made for sloppy driving conditions.  The pickup (pulling a trailer) started to fish tail in the road and slid sideways in to the trailer of the truck.  The pickup was extensively damaged and four wheels on the truck were damaged.  Fortunately no one was injured.

1.  01/06/2007 – Tree on Power Line on Fire – Main Street (Route 201), Dennistown.  High winds brought down numerous trees in the region.  In this location a tree fell over on the power line, burned, and the power line broke and fell to the ground.
