*   *  2008 EMERGENCY CALLS  *   *

After a steady annual increase in the number of emergency responses, for unknown reasons the 25 total calls for 2008 were only half the 2007 total of 50.

25. 12/23/2008 – Car-Logging Truck Accident – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  The driver of the car was travelling too fast on snow-covered roads in a 25mph zone and struck the logging truck from behind.  The truck sustained minor damage; the car sustained extensive damage.  No one was injured.

24. 12/09/2008 – Car off the Road – Long Pond Road (Route 15), Long Pond Township.  The car spun around on the slippery road and slid off the road backwards striking a tree.  Both the driver and passenger sustained minor injuries.

23. 11/29/2008 – Live Power Line Down – Spruce Street, Jackman.

22. 10/29/2008 – Structure Fire – Main Street (Route 201), Dennistown.  The fire started in the attic of a local wood working shop.  Although the upper part of the building sustained heavy damage, the wood working equipment on the floor level was not damaged by the fire.

21. 10/19/2008 – Truck Fire – Route 201, Johnson Mountain Township.  There were fuel line problems with the truck earlier in the day, and the fuel line was repaired, but after driving another 50+ miles, the truck caught on fire.  The tractor portion of the tractor-trailer truck was totally destroyed.

20. 10/11/2008 – Car struck a gas pump control unit – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  The driver of the car pulled up on the wrong side of the gas pumps.  When she went to back around to the other side of the pumps, she backed over the control unit between the pumps that is used for after hours fueling.  The metal of the control unit split the car’s gas tank open and the several gallons of gasoline in the car leaked out on the control unit and on to the ground.  The driver was fortunate that the fuel did not ignite when metal was scraping against metal.  The results could have been disastrous.

19. 08/22/2008 – Rescue Ill/Lost Berry Picker – In the woods, Parlin Pond Township.  Two women went berry picking on the 21st and got lost.  No one realized that they were missing until the afternoon of the 22nd.  When they were found, one of the women (who has diabetes) was ill and could not walk.  Firefighters, Jackman Ambulance personnel and others carried her out.

18. 08/15/2008 – Minivan Moose – Long Pond Road (Route 15), Long Pond Township.  The driver of the minivan struck a moose in the road.  The minivan sustained extensive damage to the front end, windshield and roof, but fortunately the driver and 2 of her 3 passengers sustained only minor injuries.  The outcome could have been much worse.

17.  08/03/2008 – Pickup-Moose – Main Street (Route 201), Dennistown.  The driver of the pickup struck a moose in the road.  Although she left the scene to report the accident, she thought that she had killed the moose and it was in the road.  And she thought that fuel was leaking from her pickup.  Firefighters could find no fuel leak in her pickup.  And firefighters could not find the moose.

16.  07/31/2008 – Structure Fire – Long Pond Road (Route 15), Jackman.  A fire started in wiring in a wall (possibly related to a nearby lightning strike a month before that took out the phones, satellite TV, and some lights in the same house).  Once the burning part of the inside wall was accessed, firefighters were able to extinguish the fire with less than one gallon of water for a pressurized water extinguisher.

15. 07/28/2008 – Crane Truck rollover – Long Pond Road (Route 15), Jackman.  The driver of the truck swerved to avoid a moose in the road.  Unfortunately, the banks on the side of the road are quite steep so once the right wheels of the truck were off the road, the vehicle rolled over.  The driver was not injured, but the fuel in the truck did leak out and had to be cleaned up.

14. 06/30/2008 – Tractor-Trailer off the road – Main Street (Route 201), Dennistown.  The driver of the truck hauling a load of steel apparently fell asleep.  The truck went off the road taking down several trees.  The truck sustained extensive damage.  Amazingly, the driver received only minor injuries.

13. 05/25/2008 – ATV Accident – ATV trail, Johnson Mountain Township.  Coming down hill the ATV operator hit a bump and his ATV flipped over frontward.  Although the ATV did not land on the operator, the operator sustained serious injuries.  After being transported by ambulance to the Jackman Region Health Center, the ATV operator was flown by LifeFlight helicopter to a hospital in Bangor.

12. 05/20/2008 – Fire Alarm Activation – Mill Road, Jackman.  Apparently a low backup battery for the alarm system activated the alarm.

11. 04/20/2008 – Vehicle Fire – Talpey Road, Moose River.  A go cart caught on fire and was seriously damaged.  No other property was damaged.

10. 04/19/2008 – Plugged Chimney – Main Street (Route 201), Dennistown.  Creosote had built up in a chimney and blocked the chimney.  There was no fire and there was no damage.

9. 04/18/2008 – Snowmobile Accident – Club trail, Dennistown.  A snowmobiler lost control of his snowmobile while traveling on the edge of the trail, and the snowmobiler was thrown from his snowmobile and impaled on a tree root.  The snowmobiler suffered serious injuries.  The fire department used its rescue sled to transport the snowmobiler from the woods to the awaiting ambulance.

8. 04/04/2008 – SUV Rollover – Long Pond Road (Rt. 15), Jackman.  During a snow storm the driver lost control of the vehicle, the vehicle slid to the right and hit the snowbank, the vehicle then spun around and the rear of it hit the snowbank and the vehicle rolled over on to its roof.  The driver was not hurt.

7. 03/21/2008 – SUV Rollover – Route 201, Parlin Pond Township.  During a high wind, snow situation, the Department of Transportation was apparently unable to keep up with properly maintaining the roads, and as such, the roads were very slippery.  The driver of the SUV lost control of his SUV going uphill, and it rolled over on its side partially blocking one lane.  Both the driver and the passenger had minor injuries.

6. 03/10/2008 – Snowmobile Accident – ITS 88, Long Pond Township.  A snowmobiler hit a fallen tree in the trail and sustained serious injuries.  He was flown from the scene by LifeFlight helicopter.

5. 03/09/2008 – Structure Fire – Forest Street, Jackman.  A neighbor did not notice anything until the house was fully involved with fire.  The home is owned by a couple from out of town who come to the house periodically.

4. 03/08/2008 – Transformer Fire – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  A caller reported a transformer on fire, but it was out when the fire department arrived on scene.

3. 02/16/2008 – Snowmobile Accident – ITS 88, Thorndike Township.  A man driving his snowmobile too fast lost control and crashed in to another snowmobile.  The driver of the first snowmobile was seriously injured and had to be taken from the scene by LifeFlight helicopter.

2.  01/28/2008 – Mutual aid call to assist West Forks Fire Department at a structure fire – Moxie Road in Moxie Gore Township.

1.  01/16/2008 – Smoke in a residence – Spruce Street, Jackman.  A resident of the home closed the microwave door that was open, and when the door was closed the microwave turned on.  The resident did not notice that the microwave turned on.  After a few minutes the food in the microwave started to burn.  The resident first could smell smoke in the home, and then saw smoke in his kitchen, so he called 911.  There was no damage to the home.
