After a steady annual increase in the number of emergency responses, for unknown reasons the number of emergency responses dropped dramatically in 2008 with 2009 thus far being equally as slow.

43. 12/22/2009 – SUV off the road – Main Street (Route 201), Dennistown.  During a snowstorm the SUV slid sideways off the road down over a steep bank.  The four people in the vehicle were very lucky that the vehicle did not roll over.  There were no injuries.

42. 12/19/2009 – Pickup Rollover – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  The driver of the pickup swerved to avoid a moose in the road.  The pickup went off the road and rolled over.  There were no injuries.

41. 12/08/2009 – Truck Rollover – Main Street (Route 201), Sandy Bay Township.  The driver was going too fast for the snowy conditions and lost control of the truck.  The truck went off the road on the right and tipped over, dumping its load of logs.  The driver suffered only minor injuries.

A snowstorm moved in late on November 27th and lasted until mid-day on the 28th.  The snow was heavy and wet and built up on the trees, and combined with gusty winds, caused numerous trees to fall down.  The Jackman region sustained 4 power outages during and after the storm, with the longest outage being almost 7 hours in duration.

40. 11/28/2009 – Tree Down in the Road – Main Street (Route 201), Dennistown.  A tree fell across the road blocking the road.  Firefighters cut the tree up and then a DOT plow came by and pushed all of the branches, etc. out of the road.

39. 11/28/2009 – Tree & Power Lines Down in the Road – Route 201, Parlin Pond Township.  A tree fell in the road almost completely blocking the road, and when the tree fell it broke the power lines.  Once firefighters were certain that the power lines were not energized nor were going to be energized, the tree was cut up and removed from the road.

38. 11/15/2009 – Chimney Fire – Main Street (Route 201), Moose River.  The fire was out on arrival.

37. 11/08/2009 – Van-Moose, Rollover & Fire – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  The alleged OUI female driver struck a moose in the road, the vehicle went off the road, rolled over, and a few minutes later caught on fire.  The first passerby, a woman who works for Customs and Border Protection, pulled the male passenger from the burning vehicle saving his life.  The driver sustained only minor injuries.  She was arrested and taken to jail.  The male passenger sustained serious injuries.  After being transported by Jackman Ambulance to the Jackman Region Health Center, he was flown by LifeFlight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

36. 11/08/2009 – Single Vehicle Accident – Mill Road, Jackman.  The accident happened the night before, but the confused driver left the vehicle and received a ride south of town.  A deputy picked him up at 1am walking along Route 201.  The driver did not know where his vehicle was located; he believed that he left it in the Bingham area.  On the morning of the 8th one of the residents of Mill Road reported that the vehicle was in the road, that there was damage to the front end, and that the air bags had been deployed.  There was a half smoked marijuana cigarette in the front seat, hence the driver’s confusion.

35.  10/20/2009 – Pickup-Moose Accident – Route 15, Sandwich Academy Grant Township.  The driver of the pickup could not avoid the collision.  The driver suffered only minor injuries.  The moose was seriously injured and had to be destroyed.

34. 10/12/2009 – Truck Accident – Long Pond Road (Rt. 15), Long Pond Township.  The driver said that the steering wheel locked up, so the truck went off the road in to the ditch.  The driver sustained minor injuries.  The truck was extensively damaged.

33. 10/11/2009 – Two Vehicle Accident – Long Pond Road (Rt. 15), Long Pond Township.  The driver of a car following an SUV did not notice that the SUV was slowing down for a turn so the car struck the rear of the SUV.  There were no injuries.

32. 10/10/2009 – Single Vehicle Accident – Main Street (Rt. 201), Sandy Bay Township.  The driver apparently fell asleep and went off the road at a high rate of speed striking a culvert and causing serious damage to the car.  The driver and passenger sustained minor injuries.

29. 10/02/2009 – Two car accident with injuries – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  The driver of a car pulling out of Spruce Street on to Main Street could not see a car traveling on Main Street due to other vehicles parked along both sides of Main Street.  The driver of the car coming off Spruce Street ended up pulling right out in to the car on Main Street.  There was a driver and passenger in each vehicle, and the passengers in both vehicles sustained minor injuries.

28.  10/01/2009 – Truck Fire – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  The driver of a loaded tractor trailer truck in a 55mph zone coming down a hill had to brake hard to avoid hitting two moose that ran in to the road.  A minute later the driver noticed smoke coming from the tires on the trailer.  The driver attempted to put out the fire with an extinguisher, but the fire from the burning tires quickly spread.  By the time the fire department arrived on scene, 10 minutes after the 911 call, four tires and some of the logs were burning.  No one was injured.

27.  09/20/2009 – Brush Fire – Long Pond Road (Rt 15), Jackman.  A caller reported seeing smoke in an area along Route 15.  When firefighters arrived in the area they could see and smell smoke, but could not find what was burning for 15 minutes or so do to swirling winds.  Firefighters found a good size pile of brush and other debris burning.  Over an hour later, after the fire was almost completely extinguished, the owner of the property arrived and asked us why we put out his fire.  He lit the fire at 5am and left.  Although he had a burning permit, due to the high fire danger and high winds he should not have been burning and his burning permit should have been taken away.  Also, he is required by law to remain on scene at all times, yet he was gone from the fire for over 4 hours.

26.  09/12/2009 – Fire Alarm Activation at Jackman Region Health Center – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  The fire alarm activated indicating that the sprinkler system was flowing water.  When firefighters checked the sprinkler system they found that it was not flowing water.  Firefighters checked the building and found no problems, so they reset the alarm system and it did not activate again.

25. 08/18/2009 – ATV Accident – Slim Haggle Road, Upper Enchanted Township.  A 17 year old male went off the road and crashed his ATV.  Firefighters worked with the local ambulance corps to get the ATV out of the way, get the patient out from the trees that he was wedged in between, and get him boarded and in the ambulance.  Firefighters then set up a rural landing zone for LifeFlight helicopter to land and pick up the patient and transport him to a trauma center.  The patient’s injuries appeared to be very severe.

22. 08/02/2009 – SUV in a stream – Heald Stream Road, Jackman.  For unknown reasons the elderly driver went off the road, missed a guard rail and a utility pole, drove through 50+ feet of alders, and got hung up on a hump at the edge of the stream with the front of the vehicle in the stream.  The driver was not hurt.

21. 07/18/2009 – Tree in the Road – Main Street (Route 201), Dennistown.  A tree fell down in the road at the bottom of a small hill on a curve in a 55mph zone.  Firefighters quickly cut the tree up and got it out of the road.

19. 06/09/2009 – Car-Pole – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  The elderly driver apparently fell asleep while driving.  His northbound car crossed the southbound lane, went off the road, struck a utility pole which broke off, and then hit a tree.  The driver had minor injuries.  The passenger had more severe injuries.

18. 06/06/2009 – Car Rollover – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  The driver of the car fell asleep in a 55mph zone.  The car drifted off the road, the driver awoke, overcorrected, and the car skid sideways off the road and rolled over landing on its wheels in the ditch.  As the car rolled over, the driver’s seatbelt completely extended and did not retract, so the driver slipped out of the seatbelt and landed in the back seat.  Fortunately the driver suffered only minor injuries.

17. 06/03/2009 – Pickup-Tree Accident – River Road, Jackman.  The driver of the pickup lost control of the vehicle after driving over a series of potholes.  The vehicle went off the road and crashed in to a tree causing extensive damage to the vehicle.  The driver, although shaken up, was not hurt.

16. 05/26/2009 – Car-Moose Accident – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  The driver of the car struck the yearling moose in the road, causing extensive damage to the car and seriously injuring the front seat passenger.  After initially being transported to the Jackman Region Health Center, the passenger was flown by LifeFlight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

15. 05/21/2009 – Minor rekindle of camp fire – Route 201, Parlin Pond Township.  Dry warm, very windy weather apparently re-kindled hot embers in the duff layer under the camp that burned four days before.  Firefighters used a couple of buckets to extinguish the fire.

14. 05/17/2009 – Camp Fire – Route 201, Parlin Pond Township.  Due to a possible problem with the water pump (the cause is still under investigation), the camp caught on fire.  The two occupants of the camp woke up and had barely enough time to escape – they did not even have time to get their shoes.  The camp was totally destroyed.

13.  05/14/2009 – Tree on Power Line and Boat – Holden Cemetery Lane, Moose River.  High winds broke off a tree that landed on the homeowner’s electrical service and his boat.  The boat was heavily damaged.

12. 05/14/2009 – Grass Fire – Route 201, Johnson Mountain Township.  High winds knocked down a tree on the power line causing a grass fire.  Passers by stopped and put out the fire before firefighters arrived on scene.

11.  05/13/2009 – Fire Alarm Activation – American Way, Parlin Pond Township.  The alarm was set off by a “cooking error” – there was no fire.

10. 05/11/2009 – Chimney Fire – Drop In Drive, Long Pond.  The chimney fire was so hot that part of the chimney and roof adjacent to the chimney were damaged.  The chimney will have to be replaced from the roof line up, and the roof around the chimney will have to be repaired.

9. 04/25/2009 – Truck Fire – Heald Stream Road, Moose River.  Although the logging truck had been parked for over a day, a fire that originated in the engine compartment destroyed the truck.  No one noticed the fire until the truck was fully involved.

7. 02/20/2009 – Reported Chimney Fire – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  A passerby noticed flames coming from a chimney, so he stopped to notify the occupants.  He knocked on the door and no one answered, so he drove to the nearest convenience store to report the fire.  When the fire department arrived on scene there was no fire.  The chimney did have a lot of creosote in it, so the occupants of the home got out their chimney brush and cleaned the chimney so that there would not be a problem.

3. 01/24/2009 – Rescue stranded snowmobilers – Little Bigwood Pond, Dennistown.  Five people rode in on one snowmobile to ice fish on Little Bigwood Pond.  Their snowmobile broke down, there was no one else on the pond, and it was very windy with the temperature below 0 degrees.  Walking was difficult due to snow conditions, and being worried about exposure to the cold they used their cell phone and called for help.  Firefighters went in on 3 snowmobiles to retrieve all 5 people and their gear.

2.  01/20/2009 – Fire Alarm Activation – Long Pond Road (Route 15), Jackman.  Technicians on site to restore the sprinkler system that activated on the 17th failed to notify the alarm company of what they were doing.  When the technicians set off the fire alarm, the alarm company automatically had the fire department dispatched.

1.  01/17/2009 – Sprinkler Activation – Long Pond Road (Route 15), Jackman.  For unknown reasons a sprinkler head opened and started flowing water.  Fortunately the water was primarily contained to one room that had both a tile floor and walls and a floor drain so the room sustained only minor damage.
