Call #2011-36: December 5, 2011 – Structure Fire

36. 12/05/2011 – Mobile Home Structure Fire – Albert Street, Jackman.  The electrical cord on a malfunctioning clock overheated and shorted out, which started the fire.  No one was home at the time.  A neighbor reported the fire, and when firefighters arrived a few minutes later flames were coming out of the window over the kitchen sink.  The kitchen, dining room and living room sustained heavy fire damage.  The bedrooms and bathroom sustained heat and smoke damage.  There were no injuries.

 

35. 11/16/2011 – Pickup-Moose-Car Accident – Route 201, Johnson Mountain Township.  A pickup hit a moose which fell in to the road.  A car ran over the moose and went in to the ditch.  The driver of the car was injured.

 

34.  11/13/2011 – Unknown Fire Issue – Long Pond Road (Route 15), Jackman.  A caller died 911 then hung up.  When the dispatchers called back to ask the caller why he had hung up, he said that he thought that he needed the fire department then decided that he did not.  The fire department was preparing to go check out what was going on when the caller’s father called 911 to say that everything was ok.

 

33. 10/13/2011 – Pickup – House Accident – Main Street (U.S. Route 201), Moose River.  The driver of the pickup had a coughing fit, lost control of his pickup, and crashed in to the front of the house causing serious damage.  The driver was injured.

 

32. 09/23/2011 – Car-Moose Accident – Main Street (U.S. Route 201), Jackman.  Although the car was extensively damaged, the driver was not injured.

 

31. 09/20/2011 – Boating Accident – Big Wood Pond, Attean Township.  For unknown reasons the sole occupant of the boat fell out of the boat and drowned.

 

30. 09/20/2011 – Pickup-Moose Accident – Main Street (Route 201), Sandy Bay.  The driver of the pickup was not injured.  The pickup was heavily damaged.  The moose was killed.

 

29. 08/28/2011 – Tree on a Power Line – Pleasant Street, Moose River.  During the rain and wind from the remnants of Hurricane Irene, a tree fell across the road and the power line, blocking the road.  Because the problem was near the end of a dead end road and there were no power company crews immediately available (they were all busy), firefighters put caution tape up across the road and cleared the scene.

 

28. 08/12/2011 – Hiker suffered a heart attack – Sally Mountain, Attean Township.  The man hiking with his wife suffered a heart attack at the top of the mountain.  Due to rough terrain and rough access, it was almost two hours from the time of the 911 call before the first rescuer arrived on scene.  The man did not survive.

 

27. 08/04/2011 – Vehicle Rollover – Main Street (Route 201), Sandy Bay Township.  The driver of the vehicle fell asleep and the vehicle went off the road and rolled over once landing back on its wheels.  The driver was not hurt.  The passenger sustained minor injuries.

 

26. 08/01/2011 – Tree on a Power Line on Fire – Heald Stream Road, Moose River.  High winds from a thunderstorm brought the tree down on to the power line.  Firefighters blocked off the area until a representative of the power company arrived and removed the tree.

 

25. 07/30/2011 – Carbon Monoxide Alarm – Mountain View Lane, Jackman.  The alarm was apparently activated by steam from a shower.

 

24. 07/27/2011 – Car-Moose Accident – Main Street (Route 201), Dennistown.  Although firefighters found the badly injured moose, the car was nowhere to be found.

 

23. 07/21/2011 – Mutual Aid call from West Forks Fire Department for a forest fire at Moxie Pond.

 

22. 07/21/2011 – Tree on a Power Line on Fire – Main Street (Route 201), Dennistown.

 

21. 07/20/2011 – Small Forest Fire – Long Pond Township.  Someone had built a fire on the north shore of Long Pond and failed to extinguish the fire.  Firefighters were on scene for many hours extinguishing the blaze.

 

20. 07/19/2011 – Log Truck Crash In to a House – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  The driver of the truck claims to have fallen asleep.  The truck drifted off the road striking a utility pole and breaking it off.  The truck then hit a second utility pole and flipped on its side, with the load of logs crashing through the first floor of the house.  There were 6 people in the house.  Three had minor injuries, two had moderate injuries, and one child was killed.

 

19. 07/16/2011 – Single Vehicle Accident – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  For unknown reasons the driver lost control of the vehicle and went off the road crashing the vehicle in to a ditch.  The driver then fled the scene.  Although the crashed vehicle was a 1996 Geo Tracker, the license plate on the vehicle was for a 1994 Chevy S10 Pickup.

 

18. 07/06/2011 – Numerous trees in the road – Long Pond Road (Route 15), Long Pond Township.  By the time that firefighters had been called to this scene, DOT was on scene removing the trees.

 

17. 07/06/2011 – Tree down in the road – Pleasant Street, Moose River.  Firefighters removed the tree.

 

16. 07/06/2011 – Tree on a power line on fire – Attean Road, Jackman.  A severe thunderstorm brought down a lot of trees in the area.  This tree was laying on the power line burning, then the power line snapped and fell to the ground.  Firefighters remained on scene until the electric company arrived to take care of the problem.

 

15. 06/27/2011 – Fire Alarm Activation – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  The fire alarm system activated for unknown reasons.

 

14. 06/22/2011 – Pickup-Moose Accident – Main Street (Route 201), Sandy Bay Township.  The driver of the pickup was unable to avoid striking the moose that ran in to the road.  The pickup was extensively damaged (totaled), and the moose was killed, but the driver was not injured.

 

13. 05/05/2011 – Carbon Monoxide Alarm – Talpey Road, Moose River.  Power had been out for several hours and a generator running to power the office at the mill apparently was producing CO that was getting back in to the office building.  After determining that there was a CO problem in the building (and not just a faulty alarm), firefighters shut down the generator and aired out the building.  Then the generator was re-started.  After 15 minutes there was no CO building up in the building so the fire department cleared the scene.

 

12. 03/27/2011 – Snowmobile Fire – Club Trail, Dennistown.

 

11. 03/18/2011 – Tree down on a Power Line – U.S. Route 201, Parlin Pond Township.  High winds brought down many trees in the area, and in this particular location, the tree fell across the power line that supplies electricity to the region.  The power was out for a couple of hours.

 

10. 03/03/2011 – 911 Call from Snowmobile Trail – ITS 87, Johnson Mountain.  A snowmobiler made a 911 call from the snowmobile trail.  However, due to very poor cell phone reception, the communications center could understand very little information before the call was lost.  It was believed that there was an emergency on the trail.  Members of two fire departments and one ambulance service, along with two game wardens responded to the remote location and found a dead moose in the trail.  The original 911 caller called the communications center later to say that his original 911 call was about a dead moose in the trail.  PLEASE ONLY CALL 911 FOR A REAL EMERGENCY!

 

9. 03/03/2011 – Lift Assist to Jackman Ambulance – Spruce Street, Jackman.  Firefighters assisted the ambulance crew in moving a very ill man to the ambulance.

 

8. 02/21/2011 – Lift Assist to Jackman Ambulance – Marston West, Jackman.  An elderly man fell in his home and was injured.  Firefighters had to break in to the home so that the ambulance crew could get to the injured man to help him.  Firefighters then helped the ambulance crew carry the man out to the ambulance.

 

7. 02/19/2011 – Snowmobile Accident – ITS 88, Moose River.  A male snowmobiler went off the trail and was seriously injured.  Firefighters used the fire department’s snowmobile and one it the fire department’s two rescue boggans to transport the injured snowmobiler to the ambulance.

 

6. 02/14/2011 – Chimney Fire – Main Street (Rt. 201), Jackman.  A lot of creosote had built up in the stove pipe and chimney, so when the homeowner opened up the stove to get the fire going, the creosote ignited.  There was no damage to the home.

 

5. 02/10/2011 – Pickup off the Road – Route 201, Johnson Mountain.  The southbound pickup pulling a large snowmobile trailer went off the northbound side of the road and in to the snow bank.  A passer by stopped and called in the accident, but the vehicle was locked up and the occupants had left the scene.

 

4. 01/29/2011 – Snowmobile Accident – ITS 89, Moose River.  Just a few minutes after being paged for the previous snowmobile accident (call #3) we were notified of a second snowmobile accident involving a male snowmobiler.  Firefighters used the second rescue boggan and a firefighter’s snowmobile to transport the injured snowmobiler to the ambulance.

 

3. 01/29/2011 – Snowmobile Accident – ITS 89, Jackman.  A female snowmobiler rolled her snowmobile over and was injured.  Firefighters used the fire department’s snowmobile and one it the fire department’s two rescue boggans to transport the injured snowmobiler to the ambulance.

 

2. 01/23/2011 – Chimney Fire – Talpey Road, Moose River.  Material inside the tall chimney at the local sawmill ignited.  As the first fire truck was leaving the fire station to go to the scene, firefighters on scene (who are employees of the mill) reported that the fire had gone out.

 

1. 01/15/2011 – Snowmobile Fire – Main Street (Route 201), Jackman.  The owner of the snowmobile started the snowmobile and it caught on fire.  The owner and his friends tried using snow and a fire extinguisher to put the fire out, but they could not stop the fire.  They then called 911 to report the fire.  When firefighters arrived they quickly extinguished the fire.  An ATV parked next to the burning snowmobile had melted fenders.  A nearby garage showed no sign of damage.
