FIRE PREVENTION

"A fully involved structure
fire."
Have you drawn an escape plan from
your home, showing at least two ways out of every room, and then practiced
the plan with a home fire drill? The time to learn your escape routes,
while crawling on the floor, is now while conditions are good. If a fire should strike your home, the
blinding, choking smoke can make your own home a confusing maze for you. A
maze that you may not escape from.
Have you checked your smoke
detectors recently? Do you change the
batteries on an annual basis? (Most
AC powered detectors have a battery for a back up during power outages.)
Did you know that the sensors in
smoke detectors are only good for 10 years?
If your smoke detectors are more than 10 years old, it is time to
replace them.

The local fire prevention program is
conducted every October for the local elementary school. The children are provided with classroom
instruction (which includes videos and fun interaction), and the children
come to the fire station to see the trucks, equipment, and a firefighter in
full turnout gear wearing an airpack.
The two photos below were taken
during the 2001 fire prevention program.

Children need to learn that
firefighters in full gear are their friends. Many children fear
firefighters when the firefighters are fully outfitted to fight a
fire. The pre-schoolers (left photo)
are being shown a firefighter and all that he is wearing. Many of the children in the kindergarten
class (right photo) were initially apprehensive about the firefighter, but
once they had the opportunity to come close and touch him and talk to him,
their apprehension went away and smiles spread across their faces. They know that firefighters are their
friends.
